HSBC's private banking arm, which is based in Switzerland, is under formal investigation in France, days after being accused of tax fraud by the Belgium authorities.

Sotheby's chief executive steps down after 14 years

The chief executive of renowned auction house Sotheby's, William Ruprecht, is stepping down after 14 years in the role.
Mr Ruprecht would leave his post by "mutual agreement" after a successor was found, Sotheby's said on Thursday.
His departure comes a year after activist investor Dan Loeb started demanding changes at the auction house.
Last week, chief competitor Christie's significantly outsold Sotheby's in contemporary art auctions in New York.

Malaysia to end petrol and diesel subsidies



Malaysia plans to end decades-old petrol and diesel subsidies from next month in an attempt to save billions of dollars and reduce its fiscal deficit.
The government said prices of a popular grade of petrol and diesel would be fixed according to a "managed float".

RBS admits error in stress test data

State-backed bank Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has said an error meant it only just passed a European stress test of its balance sheet.

US stocks closed at yet another record high after China announced a surprise rate cut and the head of the European Central Bank hinted at further stimulus action

The Dow Jones rose 91.06 points to 17,810.06, while the S&P 500 climbed 10.75 points to 2,063.50.
That was the 28th record high for the Dow and the 45th record for the S&P 500 this year.
The technology-focused Nasdaq gained 11.10 points to finish at 4,712.97.
